This is, in fact, incredibly dangerous to exceed. The value was chosen to prevent meltdowns. The cooling model in ARES is much more realistic than the one in Companion, and therefore much less tolerant of extreme charging. Adding this limit was the only way to stop turbo charging on the Charger 4 from blowing up units. (Other casualties include FTL and shield recharge, which spend too much power.)
But, that being said, I've added a setting to alpha 1.2 for this, called status.intake-limit which defaults to 400000 J. When that version comes out it will be possible to adjust this value.
