Normally, whenever you speak in chat, ARES makes a short sound effect play that consists of a beep or vocalization suitable for your gender and persona settings. This is called the speech marker.
Gender: You selected your gender (including your voice gender) during the Setup wizard. If you want to try changing it, check the settings... > identity... > voice gender menu.
Persona: For the time being, we're just using the default, so you don't need to worry about what this means. We'll be explaining more in later tutorials.
If you do not like the default for your gender, there are a few things you can do:
Mute all speech markers. This is done by sending the following command in local chat:
@db hardware.controller.volume.marker 0.0
Replace the default speech marker with a new sound.
Replace the default speech marker with a beep or silence.
Replacing the default speech marker
The default ARES persona is a little cleverer than most and can check for replacement sounds whenever it is activated. These are stored on your system as environment variables. Some of the official markers and how to use them with the default persona are listed below.
Step 1
To customize your default speech marker, choose a sound from the list below, and send its command in local chat.
After loading the marker, you need to reload the default persona, either by using the personas... menu and choosing the default option, or by sending the command @persona default in local chat.
You may need to modify the @set command slightly so that it refers to the correct gender. For example, Beep #1 is listed as being a neuter sound, and so mentions marker-neuter in the @set command. To use this sound with the female voice gender, simply change it to instead read @set marker-female 32e278c1-1864-8526-ac5d-0c56d677124f and then follow the rest of the instructions.
