gender
ARES System Manual: id Utility
Views and updates the unit's gender settings. Gender is used to select pronouns and speech markers (chat tones).
The gender aspects are:
- physical: How the system will refer to the unit in descriptions (in scripts and preset messages).
- mental: How the unit will refer to itself when speaking (in scripts and preset messages).
- voice: Which set of noises to play when the unit speaks. These sounds change depending on which persona is loaded.
- all: Set all of the above simultaneously.
The system notification voice is not related to the unit's gender, and is managed separately. See baseband.
To set the mental or physical gender value, use one of the following:
c: custom (use provided pronouns)
f: female (she/herself)
i: inanimate (it/itself)
m: male (he/himself)
n: neuter (they/themself)
To limit the scope of work required for creating personas, voice gender only allows n, f, and m options. Other values will be interpreted as n.
To provide custom pronouns, fill out the following template, taking care to ensure no typos are created:
@id gender all c neuter,they,them,their,theirs,themself
Then apply the same for physical instead of mental.
For example:
Spivak: @id gender all c nonbinary,xe,xem,xyr,xyrs,xemself
Fae: @id gender all c fae,fae,faer,faer,faers,faerself
Piercy: @id gender all c individual,per,per,pers,pers,perself
Elverson: @id gender all c nonbinary,ey,em,eir,eirs,eirself
Philologus: @id gender all c nonbinary,ve,ver,vis,vis,verself
Net: @id gender all c hermaphrodite,sie,hir,hir,hirs,hirself
These forms are known as the gender name (which should be usable as an adjective), subject, object, genitive, possessive, and reflexive.
