ARES System Manual: HW-CAPS
HW-CAPS (Hardware Capabilities) is a mechanism for allowing devices to self-report their purpose, version, vendor, and communications protocols. Its main purpose is to provide something for scanners to detect, as well as to encourage open protocols and interoperability between manufacturers in Second Life.
Most NS products updated during or after April, 2024 contain some form of HW-CAPS reporting mechanism.
The HW-CAPS transponder may be temporarily disabled with the input command
